'BOON' was a lighthearted drama series which aired from 1986 - 1992 on ITV (UK).
It starred the late Michael Elphick as Ken Boon and David Daker as Harry Crawford. By the second series Neil Morrissey would join as Ken's trusty-but-dopey sidekick, Rocky Cassidy.

Ken, was a loyal dreamer who had pipe dreams of being a "Modern-Day Lone Ranger", - although his pipe dreams more often than not, became an obvious reality. - His head would often be buried in Western novels or Raymond Chandler books by night, but by day, he would strive to fulfill his ambitions to earn an honest day's crust and just live life as pleasantly and legally as humanly possible. But life, often got in the way of Ken's honest ambitions.

Ken was forced out of the fire brigade after attempting to rescue a young boy from a house fire without his breathing apparatus and received damaged lungs for his troubles - but Ken was not about to accept that life had thrown him on the scrap heap and decided to make an adventure out of his retirement.
While his best friend of many years, Harry Crawford was sunning it in Spain with his wife, Ken was back home in Birmingham attempting to build himself a market garden in a field that he had invested in. His new home, was a caravan (which he was having major troubles paying for.) Harry soon returned back to Brum after his wife, Alison ran off with a Spanish hairdresser. He had now launched his own new venture, a hotel called the Grand, and this is where Ken's life changed forever.

After some time, and continuous nagging, Harry finally convinced his poor friend, Ken to place an Ad in the local newspaper to find some work so he could pay his way. Ken was not eager to go along with Harry's plan, but he was beginning to see that there was no other way out of his predicament.
The AD read "Ex-Fireman seeks interesting work - Anything Legal considered".
The replies to the Ad soon started coming in, and Ken was starting to earn some cash. He was doing everything you could imagine: Child minding, helping old ladies, saving people from protection rackets, rescuing a lion... the list is endless!

As time went by, things changed for Ken and Harry. Harry opened a bigger and better hotel, Ken started his own motorcycle messenger service, made a new friend in the shape of Rocky Cassidy, and finally became a private-eye. Ken's life was certainly not getting easier, but it was definitely getting more exciting.

By the 5th series (1990) Ken and the gang were higher up in the business world... or at least Harry was - Ken, still running his detective agency, 'Boon Investigations' was living in a canal boat and still trying to figure out where his life was taking him. But needless to say, his job was still giving him adventures!

By the time the series came to an end, the hard work of being a detective was finally taking its toll on Ken, and he had began hinting to Harry and Rocky that it was time for him to retire from it all together. Harry, obviously talked Ken around on more than one occasion, but Ken's heart was no longer in it.

In the final episode, 'Shot in the Dark', things took a slight turn - usually, the star of the show is the one who gets the girl, but this time around, Harry was the one who got the girl. An Irish woman called Mary.
As the credits were about to roll, Harry told Ken that he had "something to tell him..." but the audience were left hanging...

Boon ran for 7 years, and was a household name all over the UK. If Michael Elphick hadn't decided to move on to other things, it probably would have gone on for a few more years. I wonder... what would Ken be doing now?
